Gamecube Memory Card

BUY GAMECUBE Gamecube Memory Card: This page lists Gamecube Memory Cards that are currently available at the major online retailers. Memory Cards are information storage devices used to record information such as game progress, high scores and more, and are REQUIRED for nearly all Nintendo GameCube games that save game progress. In addition to the original Nintendo Memory Card 59 (named after its capacity to store 59 save blocks), there is another original Nintendo memory card available now, the GameCube Memory Card 251. The new card stores more than four times the capacity of the Memory Card 59.

    About Bits and Bytes
1 byte = 8 bits. Why is this important? The manufacturers of 3rd party memory cards use (perhaps intentionally?) confusing terms about their Gamecube memory cards. For example, 4 Mb stands for Mega Bits, not megabytes (MB). 4 Mb (megabits) denotes the capacity of the original Memory Card 59, which can store 59 save blocks. 8 MB should stand for 8 Megabytes (16x the capacity of 4 Megabits), but some manufacturers use Mb/MB interchangeably. Thus - always check for how many blocks the card actually holds! Some parties call their cards flash cards, others don't - this doesn't really matter. Technologically, they all use "flash memory", which is a particular type of non-volatile memory in a storage device.

    Reliable vs. cheap?
Please note that according to many customer reviews, Gamecube memory cards from 3rd party manufacturers tend to be less reliable, leading to potential data loss or data corruption problems. This is a phenomenon not only seen with Gamecube memory cards, but appears to hold true for any type of video game memory card. The 3rd party products are cheaper, but less reliable. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that it is a matter of chance. Many people bought 3rd party gamecube memory cards and never had ANY problems. In a nutshell - if you don't mind the off-chance that you may have to return the product, go with the cheaper memory card. If you need the peace of mind that you bought something that WILL work, get an original Gamecube memory card by Nintendo.
