May 13, 2002
Gamecube Online Gaming announed for Fall 2002 Nintendo U.S. revealed their plans to introduce online gaming for the Gamecube console this fall, using dial-up and high-speed Internet adapters that will be available at a suggested retail price of $34.95. The first Gamecube online game will be Sega's "Phantasy Star Online." The Gamecube Broadband Adapter and the Modem Adapter are available for preorder at Ebgames.com. Gamecube Online Gaming managed by publishers, not Nintendo Nintendo will promote its Internet adapters as add-ons for specific games when that makes sense but does not plan a major marketing blitz around the GameCube's Internet capabilities. Game publishers themselves will be responsible for operating the online networks on which their games run. Nintendo will not collect any additional revenue from Gamecube online games and will not charge an access fee. Online Gaming is extension of Gamecube console play Sony also has its sights clearly on Online Gaming and plans to offer an adapter for the Playstation 2 with both dial-up and broadband ports for $39.99 in August 2002. Nintendo sees Gamecube online gaming as an extension of console gameplay, but does not focus its future entirely on online gaming and connectivity in the way Sony does, especially so with their currently developed Playstation 3. ©2002 The Playstation Reporter | ||
