What is a mod chip?
A mod chip is a device that is added to the internal hardware of a video games console in
order to increase its functionality. This means that the changes to the hardware allow you to use the console for things it wasn't originally designed for. There are a number of PS2 mod chips to choose from but they all offer similar features. One of the popular uses of mod chips is to play games destined for other countries or markets. PS2 games are region encoded to only work in the predefined region. For example, games developed for the Japanese market will not work in an American PS2 without modification. Similarly, games that are being adapted for the European market that uses the PAL video norm are often released months later than their American (NTSC) counterparts. With a PS2 equipped with a mod chip, imported games can be played regardless of region encoding or PAL/NTSC video system. Buy Playstation 2 mod chips & more! Depending on the particular chip, it may allow you to:
In the past, all PS2 mod chips required you to open up the PS2 for their installation. This meant the PS2 was no longer under warranty. This is no longer the case. There are now 'mod chips' for the PS2 that don't even require you open up the console, so your console remains under warranty!
