Although Sony had previously denied any forthcoming price cuts, analysts speculate that Sony may opt to preempt the anticipated Xbox price drop by going down to $199.99 for the Ps2 console before Microsoft announces their own xbox price drop. This daring move is to be announced at Sony's investors conference in Japan. Nintendo had stated that they may follow suit with the Gamecube console, in case the Playstation 2 price is be reduced.

In the past, the Playstation 2 had stubbornly (and admittedly correctly, proving the marketing strategists right) held on to their $299 price tag when the Xbox and Gamecube were released. It did not mean a decline in sales but instead more PS2's were sold during that time than rivalling consoles. Sony stated that in the light of now 30 million Playstation consoles sold worldwide, they see no reason in the foreseeable future to change their price of $299. TOKYO -- Japanese electronics and entertainment giant Sony Corp. on Tuesday slashed the U.S. price of its PlayStation 2 video-game machine to $199, underpricing its biggest rival, Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox, by $100.
Sony's popular game console, which has now sold more than 30 million worldwide, had been selling in the United States for $299. Sony also lowered the price of the less advanced PS one console to $49 from $99. |
